Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah says he decided to reject a new contract at Chelsea to secure first-team football as he would have “got frustrated” at being sent out on loan again.

Chalobah signed professional terms with Chelsea in 2012 and regularly captained both the reserve and youth sides. After coming through the youth system at Stamford Bridge, he did not spend much time in London as he was shipped out on loan to six different clubs. The 22-year-old was on loan at Watford, Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough, Burnley, Reading and Serie A side Napoli in his five years at Chelsea.

“I wanted to come out and play,” Chalobah told BBC Three Counties Radio. “Being at Chelsea, I would have signed a new deal and gone out on loan again and got frustrated. That was the choice I had to make, but it was emotional leaving Chelsea,” he added.

“The conversation I had with the manager Antonio Conte was positive but it was a decision I had to make after being on loan six times.”

Speaking about his decision to sign for Watford, Chalobah spoke highly about his loan spell at Vicarage Road in 2012-13, where he made 42 appearances in the Championship.

He said: “Watford was my first loan and things went well. It was my best loan and positive when I was here. I was looking forward to coming back.”

A major incentive for moving to Watford was a call-up to the England senior team, having played under Gareth Southgate during his stint as England Under 21 manager. Chalobah also believes he can secure a spot in England’s World Cup squad with his performances this season.

Since Southgate’s appointment as England manager, he has given senior call-ups to several of those he worked with for the Under-21s, most recently Nathan Redmond and James Ward-Prowse.

Chalobah said:“Anyone who has played in the ranks before, who is young, can get the opportunity.

“Gareth has made it clear with selections in Redmond and Ward-Prowse, if you are doing well at clubs you have an opportunity. For everyone who is in the England set-up, it’s exciting.

Watford wrap up their pre-season preparations against La Liga side Real Sociedad on Saturday. Chalobah is set to make his Premier League debut with Watford on August 12 at Vicarage Road against Liverpool.
