Mauricio Pochettino has labelled Harry Kane as world class and also believes that he is one of the best, if not the best in that position. Kane who scored his second hat-trick in as many games made sure Tottenham brushed aside a struggling Southampton side 5-2 at the Wembley.
By doing so, the 24-year-old broke Alan Shearer’s long-standing record of most goals in a calendar year in the Premier League which was set in the year 1995. And, unsurprisingly Pochettino was full of praise for his star man.
“Harry is world-class,” Pochettino said. “Of course, Messi and Cristiano are different. Today – one striker in the world, a specific position – who is better than Harry? It’s difficult to say he’s the best but he’s shown to everyone he’s one of the best,” the Argentine added, as quoted by the Guardian.
“Both of his records are massive – to break the Premier League record set by Alan Shearer and then, if you see that over the last seven, eight or nine years, it’s always Messi and Cristiano and now, it’s Harry as well.”
Pochettino also maintained that to become the very best Kane’s aim was to maintain a level of consistency to his game as the very big players do.
“Becoming better may be a very small step of improvement but when you are at this level, you need to fight with all your determination to keep at this level,” Pochettino said.
“To do this, you need to work hard, more than before, be more professional and more focused. If you achieve something and you say, ‘If I need to run 10 metres but I will run only nine,’ you will cheat yourself, and that is a massive problem.”
“The most important thing is to keep the same mentality. The secret is to work hard every day. You cannot say no for one day. That is the secret of the big players like Harry, Cristiano and Messi. You cannot afford not to work every day.”
These comments came in the light of Kane becoming the top goalscorer this calendar year across all five leagues across all five leagues. Interestingly Harry Kane became the first player since David Villa(2009) to surpass the goalscoring of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in a calendar year for club and country.
The Englishman also broke the record for the most hat-tricks scored in a calendar year in the Premier League(6).
