The 2007-2008 season was an extremely memorable one for Stoke City, as they managed to achieve promotion to the Premier League after an absence of 23 years. Here I take a look at the club’s most notifying players.

Steve Simonsen~ The reliable keeper made 35 league appearances during the season, with 2 FA cup appearances. He left in 2010, where he went through a number of clubs that included Tranmere, Preston North End and Dundee. His time at Rangers was filled with controversy as he was found guilty of betting and he received a lengthy ban, in which Rangers released him. He now plays for Pune City in India.

Andy Griffin~ The club captain made 15 starts for Stoke in the season. After also leaving the club in 2010, he played for Reading, Doncaster Rovers and Chester before retiring in 2014.

Ryan Shshawcrossawcross~ One of the club’s most reliable defenders, Shawcross signed on loan from Manchester United and managed to score 7 goals for Stoke over the campaign, with 39 appearances. Currently still playing at the heart of the Stoke City defence.

Leon Cort~ Scoring a remarkable 8 goals in 33 starts, Cort was a key member of the promotion pushers. He also left in 2010, playing for Burnley and Charlton until his retirement in 2014

Carl Dickinson~ The fan favourite played 27 times during the season, before leaving to join Watford, and then to Stoke rivals Port Vale, where he still plays today.

Andy Wilkinson~ Club legend Wilkinson broke into the Stoke side alongside Carl Dickinson, where he put in 16 shifts. Never leaving Stoke on a permanent basis during his career he retired in 2016 at 31 years of age.

John Eustace~ Eustace doubled up as captain when Andy Griffin was away and made 26 appearances before being sold to Watford on Transfer deadline day. Currently a free agent.

Liam Lawrence~ Arguably the most important player in the side at the time, Lawrence featured 41 times for the Potters, scoring 14 goals, making him the club’s 2nd highest goalscorer behind Ricardo Fuller. Voted SCFC’s players of the year for the season, he eventually left to join Portsmouth, before joining an array of other clubs. Currently plays for Bristol Rovers.

Rory Delap~ The club legend played 44 times during the season, more than any other player. He used his long throw to his advantage by providing assists for players such as Lawrence and Fuller. He stayed at Stoke until 2013, where he signed a one year contract with Burton Albion, before announcing his retirement the same year.

Danny Pugh~ Pugh was acquired from Preston in 2007, originally on loan but then on a permanent basis. Making 27 appearances during the promotion season, he struggled to make in impact in the BPL and left to play for Leeds. Now plays for Bury.

Ricardo Fuller~ Another club legend, Fuller was pivotal to the promotion push, banging in 15 goals for the club over 39 appearances, including scoring the goal of the season. Fuller left the club in 2012 and went on to play Charlton, Blackpool, Millwall and Oldham Athletic, before leaving Oldham to become a free agent.

Mamady Sidibé~ The popular Malian striker was also a cult hero during the season, although he did not score many goals, with only 4 over 32 sightings. After leaving Stoke in 2013, he joined Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia, where he struggled before retiring in 2015.

Stoke finished second in the table during this season with 79 points, two points behind champions West Bromwich Albion.
