Roma look set to become ‘the PSG of Italy’, after Italian media outlet Milano Finanza reported that Qatar Sports Investments are interested in buying the club.

QSI, the owners of Paris Saint-Germain since 2012, are thought to be considering expanding their European project to the Italian capital.

Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport have even reported that a 400 million-euro offer may already have been made to current owner James Pallotta – the American has denied these takeover rumours.

In spite of this, renowned French media outlet L’Equipe have also reported a genuine interest from QSI and their chairman Nasser al-Khelaïfi.

To avoid a conflict of interest between the two clubs, and subsequent problems with UEFA, the source of funding for investing in Roma would have to be different to the one QSI used to purchase and run Paris Saint-Germain.

Based in a city with such rich cultural and touristic significance, which is also the capital of one of Europe’s most football-centric nations, Roma are thought to be an ideal business venture for Qatar Sports Investments.

Qatar Airways became Roma’s shirt sponsor at the beginning of this season, so there has recently been a significant financial investment in the club from Qatar already.

The astronomical boost provided by these big-money takeovers has already been seen in European football, with Manchester City and PSG benefiting hugely over the last decade.

Roma are currently one of the biggest clubs, and one of the best teams, in Italian football, but a financial takeover on this scale could catapult them towards competing for silverware regularly, and challenging Juventus’ domestic dominance at long last.
