Newcastle Transfer Rumours

Samuel Umtiti has emerged as a summer transfer target for Newcastle, according to the Chronicle.

United are monitoring his situation, and, if they stay up, he, and possibly Lyon teammate Alexandre Lacazette, could join Newcastle this summer.

The Lyon defender has certainly impressed in Ligue 1 and has the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal vying for his signature, so it would be quite a signing if the Magpies can pull it off.

The 22-year-old himself has spoken of his desire to test himself abroad. Speaking last year, the player said, “Going abroad is a dream, there are very great clubs that you dream about. England? Everyone admires that league.”

Is one of the “very great clubs you dream about” Newcastle United? Who knows. What we do know, though, is that Newcastle faces a very tough task to secure the Frenchman’s signature.

Umtiti’s versatility is certainly something that has impressed Graham Carr and Co., as he can play both center and left back. The Frenchman has appeared 20 times in Ligue 1 for Lyon this season, starting them all and picking up a goal and five yellow cards along the way.

His Champions League experience is another plus, as he appeared in four of Lyon’s matches in the group stage this season. The man born in Cameroon has represented France at the under-17, under-18, and under-19 level, as well, but has not received a senior call-up as of yet, although he is certainly on the verge of getting one.

Umtiti has been at Lyon since 2001, and with the club struggling for both results and chemistry, it is understandable he would be looking for a move elsewhere. Umtiti himself has hinted that there is a disconnect throughout the locker room.

“There’s certainly a problem,” he told RMC.  “And if there is one, then maybe we’ll have to discuss it amongst ourselves. But we really have to look at what happens on the pitch first.

“Everyone knows that in a squad, certain players get on better with others. It stops there, though. You don’t need to read more into it than that.

“As long as we rise to the occasion on the pitch, that’s the main thing. Outside, whether you get on well with someone or not, that’s not important.”

Umtiti is comfortable on the ball, and with Mbemba already on Tyneside, the Magpies would have two very good ball-playing center backs. This would help McClaren (if he survives that long) play the nice, attractive football he wants to play. The two would form one of the most athletic and skillful center back partnerships in the league.

The only concern if Umtiti arrives, though, would be the lack of height at the back as neither Mbemba or Umtiti stand above six feet (Mbemba is 6’0, Umtiti is 5’11). Both have quite a leap on them, though, so that definitely helps.

Nonetheless, Umtiti would be a fantastic signing for United. Would he want to come, though? To have any chance at all, Newcastle will have to stay up first!
