A Newcastle United fan has launched a petition on Change.org asking the club to retire the squad number 24 of former Magpie player, Cheick Tioté.
The Football world was brought to silence on Monday as it was revealed that the popular midfielder died of a suspected cardiac arrest after collapsing during training with Chinese club Beijing Enterprises. The player’s family are currently in China in the hope of finding out the true reason why he died at such a young age of 30.
The user “NUFC 4 LIFE” launched the petition following his death, and has more than 1,000 signatures. An official statement from the x petition reads: “In the light of the legend’s death. The shirt number should be retired in honour of his life. A Newcastle legend taken too soon. Get your friends and family to sign. Share on social media. Let’s show Tiote how much we loved him.”
Tioté spent six-and-a-half years whilst at Newcastle United, making more than 150 appearances in the process, but is most likely known to the majority for his phenomenal goal against Arsenal in 2011 to draw the game 4-4, the Magpies were losing 4-0 at half time.
