Tammy Abraham Set To Join Newcastle On Loan As Rafa Benítez Leads The Race

Newcastle News Transfer Rumours

After netting 26 goals for Bristol City last season, helping Lee Johnson’s men survive the drop after finishing 17th in the Championship, it seems highly rated Chelsea youngster, Tammy Abraham, is set to join Rafa Benítez’s Newcastle on a season-long loan.

At just the tender age of 19, Abraham set the Championship alight last year, with the Englishmen finishing joint second top scorer in the league behind Chris Wood (Leeds) and Glenn Murray (Brighton).

Abraham’s future had been in the spotlight in recent weeks, with Chelsea unsure how to proceed Abraham’s development, but the chance to play in the Premier League was a key factor in the deal. Benítez’s relationship with Chelsea director Michael Emanalo was also used as a bargaining tool which he had built up whilst managing the South West London side during the 2012/2013 season, where he won the Europa League.

With the North East side having guaranteed promotion at the first attempt, the Newcastle boss is keen to bolster his side in a bid to avoid a relegation scrap next season. With Newcastle’s top scorers last season being Dwight Gayle with 23 goals, Matt Ritchie with 16 and then Ayoze Perez with 12, Benítez may feel the team is too lightweight upfront with other strikers such as Mitrovic, Daryl Murphy and Adam Armstrong only netting 6 goals each. The Magpies needs another striker who he can be sure will aid Gayle upfront with the workload as Perez, Mitrovic and others didn’t chip in enough.

Benítez has already been active in the window, signing another Chelsea player Christian Atsu, who was on loan at Newcastle last season, and Abraham now looks set to be the second signing. After winning the Championship title, talks began between Benítez and owner Mike Ashley in a bid to secure the Spanish managers’ services for the following season. In a bid to keep the former Valencia, Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid manager, Mike Ashley said:

“I’ve confirmed to Rafa and Lee that they can have every last penny that the club generates through promotion, player sales and other means in order to build for next season.”

Last season the Spaniard experimented between a 4-4-2 and a 4-2-3-1 formation thus how much game time Abraham will see this season is up to debate. In a front two, Benítez will be deciding who will partner Gayle upfront. Mitrovic can be deployed as a target man and has played in the Premier League two seasons ago or whether to use Abraham alongside Gayle which will frighten defenders with the pace on display.

However, if he is to use a 4-2-3-1 when away from home, again Gayle will most likely start upfront so Abraham will be fighting amongst Mitrovic, Perez and Murphy for a place as Gayle’s replacement when needed. But with Abraham’s arrival, Newcastle will have a total of 5 strikers so either Mitrovic or Murphy may be seeing the exit door before the summer window shuts.
