Southampton welcome Manchester United to St Mary’s Stadium tonight for the first meeting since the two sides met in the EFL cup final. It was United who came out on top that day winning the game 3-2. Saints boss Claude Puel says he hasn’t got revenge on his mind despite losing that game. ‘’It’s not a case of revenge because it’s been a long time now it’s important to stay focused just on this game’’

Southampton come into the game on the back of a 2-1 win against relegated Middlesbrough but that’s the only win for the Saints in the last 6 games. On the other side, Manchester United come into the game on the back of a 2-1 loss suffered at the hands of Tottenham at the weekend. United also only 1 win in the last six games in all competitions.

Southampton can’t finish any higher than 8th in the league but will still be looking to get as many points as possible on the table to guarantee that 8th place finish. Manchester United are now guaranteed to finish 6th this season which for most involved at the club is big disappointment missing out on the top four and guaranteeing Champions League football. However, United could still qualify for the competition if they win the upcoming Europa League final against Ajax on May 24th.

Jose Mourinho could rest some of his players in this game and United’s last game of the season against Crystal Palace due to the Europa League final. This could see some of United’s youth players getting a chance with the Injury list growing at United. I personally would expect to see a few changes from the team that played against Tottenham with the hectic fixture list United have. United are also still without Paul Pogba who is on compassionate leave.

Claude Puel doesn’t have the same problems with his only focus left this season being the highest possible finish. I wouldn’t expect Puel to make many changes to his side before this game other than maybe rotating some tired legs with there only being 4 days between their game at Middlesbrough and the game tonight.

Tonight’s game could have less intensity than normal with the teams both not having much to play for now in the league, however, Southampton may have a point to prove after that defeat in the EFL cup final. They will also want to stay in the top half of the table as a bottom half finish is still on the cards if they fail to at least a point in both of the remaining games. The absents of Paul Pogba is a big loss for United and could have a big effect on tonight’s game.

Who will come out on top tonight? only time will tell…
