Manchester United recently announced the signing of Victor Lindelöf from S.L Benfica for a fee worth around £35 million. The Red Devils have been in heavy pursuit of the young defender since last summer and have finally managed to agree on a deal with Benfica. The Swedish defender was subject to heavy interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona, but José Mourinho has managed to lure the talented youngster to Old Trafford.

Here is everything you need to know about United’s latest recruit.

Victor Lindelöf hails from the Swedish city of Västerås, where he began his career at Västerås SK, making his debut in September 2010. The Swede’s impressive performances attracted interest from Portuguese giants Benfica. He would later sign for them in 2011 where he joined the youth ranks of the club. Two years later, he made his first-team debut for the club in October 2013.

However, Lindelöf had to wait until the 2015/2016 to cement his place as a regular in the first team. Since then the ‘Iceman’, as he is fondly called, has been pivotal to the Benfica defence. The Swede would go on to win three league titles with the Portuguese side.

The 22-year-old has also featured for Sweden in the U-21 European Championship in 2015, where they ran out as eventual winners. Lindelöf’s impressive displays earned him a spot in the UEFA Team of the Tournament. With such consistent displays, it was only a matter of time before Lindelof would be called on to the senior team. He has made 11 appearances for the senior team including 3 appearances at Euro 2016.

Style Of Play And Strengths:

Lindelöf is known for his ball playing skills as a defender. His ability to build up play from the back will be a much-needed asset to the Manchester United defence. His tall frame will help him with aerial duels as well as set pieces and the young Swede is also known for his hard tackling, never shying away from a challenge.

Despite his tall frame, the defender manages to cover his ground quite effectively. He can also serve as an effective right-back, given his pace and hard tackling. Lindelöf has proved himself to be a highly versatile defender for club and country.

However, his ability to stay calm and collected is what makes him stand out from the rest. His style of play has been compared to Rio Ferdinand’s especially given his tough tackling and composure from the back.

Probably the only weakness that the Västerås-born man has displayed so far is his inability to deliver the final pass. His eagerness to spread the ball quickly has resulted in him losing the ball on numerous occasions. However, he recognises this flaw and is working on improving his final pass. His positional sense while defending counter attacks could also use a bit of improvement.

His offensive numbers don’t make for good viewing as he has registered just one assist for Benfica. Nevertheless, José Mourinho won’t be too worried about this particular statistic.

Given his qualities, it is quite clear as to why Manchester United paid top dollar to sign the defender. He can form an effective centre-back partnership with Eric Bailly. His versatility as a defender also means he can fill in as right-back if required.
