Manchester United suffered their first defeat during the pre-season tour of the US this morning after Barcelona went ahead through Neymar’s opener. The Spanish side remained untroubled defensively and had it not been for David De Gea, Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar may have grabbed a handful.

Despite overcoming José Mourinho’s side, Ernesto Valverde was very impressed with United, who posed such threat through Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford. Jasper Cillessen remained relatively untested with most efforts coming down the Dutchman’s throat, but Valverde believes United can be a big threat on all fronts next season.

“Obviously, it hasn’t been well lately, but they won the Europa League last season,” the Spaniard said.

“Their presence itself is impressive. They impress and I think they are going to be a really hard team to beat. They are in the Champions League this year and I wouldn’t want to face them. For me, they are contenders to win and they are going to be hard to beat in the Premier League and the Champions League.”

Neymar’s goal separated the sides after the Brazilian pounced on a mistake by Antonio Valencia before slotting home past David De Gea, making in three goals in two games for the 25-year-old. However, many say it was his last game in Barcelona colours as a move to Paris Saint-Germain is on the cards of the winger, but Valverde insists Neymar is happy in Spain.

“Neymar was very happy talking to his Manchester United friends outside the locker room just right now. He is still with us. I am happy with the performance and that we won against a powerful team such as Manchester United.

“In the first half, I think there was a high rhythm in regards to both teams having chances in both boxes. It is clear that even though it was a friendly, both teams wanted to win.”
