Manchester United

Manchester United recalled Januzaj from his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund earlier last month after the club became annoyed at the lack of playing time he was receiving from the German club.

Januzaj returned from Borrussia Dortmund last month, although he has only made one appearance for Man United’s first-team during this time, in a match against Southampton, in which he came on as an 84th minute substitute. Since then he has struggled with injuries.

Januzaj was one of the only positives from David Moyes’ spell in charge of United. There was an enormous sense of excitement among the United fans and a belief he could develop into a world-class player. He obviously still possesses the potential to make him world-class but it’s just a question of  can he fulfil it.

So how can Januzaj revitalise his ManchesterUnited career? Well for a start he’ll need to improve his attitude.

Back in February 2015, van Gaal made these comments about Januzaj, they were not exactly flattering:

“I observe players every day of every week and communicate what I want from them. And they have to show it. If I think ‘Okay, he is now ready to play’ then maybe I let them play.

Januzaj has a lot of talent but you have to perform that talent in the matches and also in the training sessions. I do not make the line-up, the players themselves make the line-up.

The competition is high in this squad and I have to compare players. It’s not just Januzaj, I have said the same to  Falcao and  Mata.

It’s difficult for me to manage but also difficult for the player himself to manage. Is Januzaj managing it well? You have to ask him, it’s not for me.”

The main message coming from this statement is that Januzaj has not convinced the Dutchman, possibly the reason why he was later sent out on loan to Borrusia Dortmund.  During that time, Januzaj turned down an opportunity to play for the Belgium under-21 squad, not exactly a very motivational action.

He also will need a bit of fortune to fall his way. He needs a player to be unavailable or out of of form, then cement his name in that position and make it his own. Personally I feel the position he will get most game-time in, is the attacking-midfielder role, currently occuepied by Juan Mata or out on the right-wing which is occupied by Jesse Lingard. Consistency will be a major factor on how much game-time he earns.  Of course the only reliable way Januzaj will improve is by buckling down and exerting himself.

Perhaps the best thing to do for Januzaj is wait out Louis van Gaal’s tenure, which seems almost certain to end in the summer. With rumours flying round of Mourinho’s potential arrival at Old Trafford in the summer gathering, waiting van Gaal out seems the most logical things to do, considering how big a fan Mourinho is of Januzaj.

Mourinho made these comments back in January 2014:
“He is a fantastic player.”He plays not like a kid of 18 – more like a player aged 26. He is so mature and comfortable. A good and very important player.”
“Can United build a successful team around a player like him? We’ll see. I just think he is a very good player with all the attributes to have a long and successful career.”
“I don’t know the boy individually but it looks like he has the lot. Like Ronaldo at that level? That was ten years ago and I can’t remember!”
“It’s important to bring young players through from the academy. It is something I really want to happen.”
“I would prefer English players but it is global work. We are working in the academy with the kids.”
“The transitional period for young players can be the most difficult one.”
If his comments from over two years ago are anything to go by, he is clearly an admirer of the Belgian, his opinion of him can’t have have changed too much in the space of two years. Don’t be too surprised to see Januzaj featuring in an important role in “the special one’s” plans, that is if he is to be van Gaal’s successor.
