Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has revealed he told the club to sign Gabriel Jesus and Kylian Mbappé during Louis van Gaal’s tenure in charge at Old Trafford.

The 44-year-old played a key role in bringing in Anthony Martial to the club back in 2015 and has now admitted his advice on Jesus and Mbappé, who are now two of the best talents in world football, was ignored.

Mbappé became the second most expensive player in world football when he switched AS Monaco for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, a deal that was worth a stunning £166m. To make matters worse for Giggs and United, Jesus now sits eleven points clear of the red side of Manchester and is yet to lose a game in the Premier League.

Speaking to the Times, the Welshman revealed: “I watched Gabriel Jesus play three years ago. I watched [Kylian] Mbappé for a year. I was watching them with the scout and it was a no-brainer. It was just like ‘get them’. It would have been £5m or something – get them, loan them back – and that’s where the recruitment could have been better.”

Giggs has also admitted he disagreed with the decision to sell some of the key members of the United dressing room, which José Mourinho has also previously said.

“I know what a Manchester United player looks like. There have been a lot who have come through that haven’t been United players and also players who were United players and shouldn’t have left.”

“I’m talking about Rafael [Da Silva], Danny [Welbeck], and Jonny Evans – players who are United through and through. It was hard because Louis had his own ideas and you had to respect that, but, yes, we had a few arguments about a couple of them. He understood because I had played with those lads, but they just weren’t for him.”

“Some of them, like Welbeck, wanted to play more regularly, and Jonny had a few injuries at the time, so you could understand it, but – and it’s not saying it in hindsight – recruitment hasn’t been great either.”
