Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Brazilian midfielder Fred from Ukranian side Shakhtar Donetsk, according to Sky Sports.

José Mourinho’s is eager to bolster his midfield options with Marouane Fellaini set to leave the club and Michael Carrick’s retirement seeing the Englishman join the United coaching staff.

The story is also backed up by the Manchester Evening News, who say the 25-year-old could complete a move to Old Trafford next week as he travels with Brazil’s World Cup squad to Anfield for a pre-World Cup friendly with Croatia. The stadium is only 29 miles away from United’s training ground and therefore it could be the easiest route for Fred to undergo a medical.

The midfielder had also been linked with Manchester City in January, however, Pep Guardiola turned his attention to Aymeric Laporte and activated the Frenchman’s £57.2m buy-out clause. The Spaniard is now set to move for Napoli’s Jorginho rather than Fred and they attempt to mount a title defence after their record-breaking 2017-2018 campaign.

If Fred does arrive in Manchester, it’s thought United will be able to negotiate a fee lower than the £52.8m buy-out clause in his contract. The club are said to be aiming to complete a deal before the World Cup begins, which kicks off on June 14.
