Manchester United’s capture of Paul Pogba for a world record fee of £89 million has led many to question whether the Frenchman is worth that fee. In fact former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness claimed he is ‘yet to be convinced’ and doesn’t see Pogba ‘changing that many games’. Souness even boldly compared the midfielder to Barcelona forward Luis Suarez saying for the money he’d expect Pogba to score ’50 goals a season’ like Suarez. Of course Souness is a man of vast footballing experience and knowledge but on this point he is greatly mistaken, Paul Pogba is worth every penny the Old Trafford club have paid for him.

None of the central midfielders at Manchester United compare to Paul Pogba. They all have different attributes to their games but none of them are can truly dominate a game in central midfield. Ander Herrera is a box to box ball winning type midfielder who is full of energy but he lacks a range of passing, he will not thread a ball through the eye of a needle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Herrera will also not send a raking 40 yard pass down the wing, it’s simply not his game. Morgan Schnederlin and Michael Carrick are defensive midfielders and one of them will most likely partner Paul Pogba in midfield. Neither of them have the pace or the power of Pogba and lack the dynamism needed to play as an advanced central midfielder at Manchester United. While Marouane Fellaini can just about pass 10 yards to a teammate and his talents are of course his arial threat and elbowing opposition players.

In Paul Pogba Manchester United have finally found their replacement for Paul Scholes. It is no coincidence that since Scholes’ retirement that Manchester United have lacked dynamic play in central midfield and have had little to no creativity in that area of the field. Jose Mourinho himself said Manchester United need the Steven Gerrard or Paul Scholes type midfielder who will be able to feed the attacking players and score goals. Last season at Juventus Pogba scored 10 goals across all competitions last season while the highest scoring central midfielder at United was Ander Herrera with 5 goals. With the addition of Pogba to the Manchester United team the attacking players will finally have the confidence of knowing a midfielder will feed their runs with his range of passing. Paul Pogba will completely change the dynamic of the way Manchester United play. To have finally found the replacement for Paul Scholes with a player who possesses the attributes the legendary midfielder is something that United have been trying to do for years and they have finally done that.

For years La Liga has been seen as the destination for the best players in the world with English clubs unable to beat Barcelona and Real Madrid to lure those players to the Premier League. This Summer Manchester United blew Real Madrid away with their financial muscle to bring Paul Pogba back to the club. It was a statement of real intent to show Manchester United is back and delivered Ed Woodward’s promise of brining the worlds best players to Old Trafford rather than Real Madrid and Barcelona. Once again rival fans are talking about Manchester United and once again Manchester United is the pinnacle of English football. Smashing the world record transfer fee to bring arguably the best central midfielder in the world to Old Trafford without Champions League football has embarrassed the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool whose managers claimed it was ‘crazy’ to pay so much money for a player. Or is the fact Arsenal and Liverpool cant attract that level of player or pay that kind of money and their respective managers are upset by that.

By bringing Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford Manchester United have sent out the message ‘we are back’. It is a signing that improves the line-up immediately and brings attributes to the team that Manchester United have not had for years. It is a game changer that rips up the whole dynamic of English football and it’s up to the other clubs to catch up with the ambition of Manchester United. This season with arguably the best manager in the world coupled with the signings they’ve made this Summer Manchester United will be a totally different proposition to what we’ve seen in the last three seasons. Which is why Paul Pogba is worth every penny.
