Featured Manchester United Transfer Rumours

Pre season is the time when managers and new managers in particular learn where they need to strengthen their squad in the transfer market. With the record signing of Paul Pogba a matter of days from being announced attention has already turned to what Jose Mourinho needs next. With Manchester United now boasting an envious group of attacking and midfield options the weak link is now the defence. With the squad lacking a real defensive leader with Chris Smalling the most experienced out of the central defenders and considering Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are not central defenders you would want starting alongside Smalling if you want to challenge for the title. The fact previous manager Louis van Gaal chose to play midfielder Daley Blind alongside Smalling last season tells you everything about the previous managers faith in Rojo and Jones. The difference now is that Jose Mourinho wants to solve this problem and wants a central defender. So, who could fill this void?

The Inter centre back was a target for Jose Mourinho during the special ones second spell at Chelsea but a move never materialised. An experienced defender who was a stalwart of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid team that won La Liga in 2014 before moving on to Serie A. Uncompromising in his defending and rated as one of the best central defenders in Europe Miranda certainly wouldn’t be phased by the challenges the Premier League has to throw at him. The Brazilian would be the ideal addition to the United back line adding some much needed experience to play alongside Chris Smalling.

Kostas Manolas

A player who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford since Jose Mourinho took charge. The Greek international has made a real name for himself sine moving to Roma in 2014 as one of the finest defenders in Serie A. Comfortable on the ball and physical in his defending Manolas established himself as the leader at the heart of the Roma defence last season. Despite being 25 years old Manolas has incredible leadership qualities and could be the man to take hold of the Manchester United back line as he has done at Roma. He would also be a longer term option compared to Miranda.

Jose Fonte

The Southampton captain starred at the Euro’s for Portugal as they won the competition. No stranger to English football Fonte has made 243 appearances for Southampton and has been the catalyst at the back for Southampton during their rise. Fonte has proved himself as a leader as captain of Southampton and would provide the much needed experience United are lacking at the back. There would be less risk in bringing Fonte to the club as he already knows English football and wouldn’t need time to adapt.

Shkodran Mustafi

The German international was one of the stand out players last season in a shocking season for Valencia. Mustafi would be available for around £20 million and could prove to be a real bargain if Jose Mourinho chose him to be the man to play alongside Chris Smalling. Mustafi does lack the experience of other targets but does have massive potential and would be a longer term option but it looks as if Jose Mourinho wants a player with more experience than Mustafi.

Ezequiel Garay

There hasn’t been a Summer in recent times where Manchester United haven’t been linked with a move for Garay. His name has popped up yet again and with good reason too. Despite moving to Russian football Garay remains one of the best centre backs around but its thought that the Argentine wants to leave Zenit. Another player who has been linked with Jose Mourinho during his second spell at Chelsea so its no surprise he is a potential target. The 29 year old would be the experienced partner for Chris Smalling that Mourinho is looking for. An excellent defender that could excel in English football and bring some much needed experience to the back line at Old Trafford.
