Manchester City are set to pay the release clause of Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao in the coming days as Pep Guardiola looks to strengthen his defensive options as the Citizens march on toward the Premier League title.

The 23-year-old has been linked with City on numerous occasions in the past few years and it seems the move will happen before the transfer window slams shut next week.

The deal will make the Frenchman the second most expensive defender in history behind Virgil van Dijk who stole the crown earlier this month. Though Guardiola’s side reportedly pulled out of the race for Alexis Sánchez due to the Chilean’s wage demands, a move for Laporte will see City’s spending under Guardiola surpass £450m.

Given Laporte’s age and the money invested in John Stones, Guardiola’s long-term plan at the Etihad could heavily feature the duo at the heart of the defence, especially with the ageing and injury prone Vincent Kompany seemingly on the verge of moving on.

According to El Correo, via City Watch, the total fee paid for Laporte’s services will rise to €150million with €42million to be paid in wages over the course of a six-year contract.

West Brom’s Jonny Evans, formerly of Manchester United, was also reportedly a target for City, though it’s likely their interest in the Northern Irish defender was a smokescreen for Laporte.
