To start with a quiz question: Since mid May, what do these football players have in common with each other?

Bernd Leno

Marc Ter Stegen

Ben Chilwell

Jonas Hector

Kieran Gibbs

Jonathan Tah

Niklas Sule

Antonio Rudiger

Skhodan Mustafi

Ignacio Camacho

Ruben Neves

Samuel Bastien

Mahmoud Dahoud

Piotr Zielinski

Mario Gotze

Breel Embolo

Gonzalo Higuain

Sadio Mane

Andrei Yarmalenko

The answer is all of these players and a few others I have left off the list, is that they have all been linked with joining Liverpool FC this summer, by various sources.  I have listed 19 players who in the last 5 to 6 weeks, people have seen their names and start jumping to conclusions.  Camacho was even reported to be at Melwood training ground.  Zielinski was spotted holding up a Liverpool shirt (see above picture), so due to that, some saw this as a done deal, that it was only a matter of time before he put pen to paper.

In the last few days, Higuain rumour has caught on fire, as Jurgen Klopp was filmed in America watching Higuain and Argentina play in a game, plus photos seemed to suggest that next to Klopp in the stadium was Higuain’s brother.  However, other reports say that is was not his brother, but actually Jurgen Klopp’s brother, and that Jurgen is currently on vacation with his family  in America just taking in a football match, as many of us do when on holiday.

I have no inside knowledge but to me the Higuain transfer speculation is nonsense.  The player has just come off a record breaking season with Napoli where he scored 36 league goals.  His transfer fee would be around £40 million pounds or thereabouts.  Why would Liverpool when they need reinforcements more urgently in other areas of the pitch, pay that amount of money, when finances are not unlimited, for a striker, when you have Daniel Sturridge, Divok Origi, Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings, who can all play as a striker?  Let alone before we even get into why Higuain after his stock is so high, join a club not playing Champions League football next season?

Many fans are getting exasperated by all these rumours and then nothing happening, but fans need to be realistic, Liverpool have already brought in three new faces for next season in Matip, Grujic and Karius, whilst other clubs around them such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs and Leicester have not individually as yet brought in that many.  So business has been done, but I do agree more is needed, but we are still in early June, with the European Championships imminent, so many European players away in training camps preparing for the tournament.

Finances are not unlimited, and Klopp and his team will need to do business wisely, and bring in the right players.  Left back and a defensively minded central midfielder for me are absolute musts. I keep hearing fans saying  in Klopp we trust, so let’s as fans show him that.  Let Twitter play out its rumours but just take a step back and think is this a real potential signing for the club?

Appreciate seeing transfer rumours gets the juices flowing and starts you thinking what a signing he would be, and how he would link up with existing players etc, and I am not telling you what to believe and what not to believe.  But for me, I will not believe anything until I see a respected source confirming the rumour, and/or, one of the two respective clubs, either the selling club or Liverpool, confirm that talks are ongoing or confirm the deal is done.

Just remember anyone can start a story on social media outlets and people jump on it, I could start one now.  Thinking about it, how come I have not seen Liverpool linked with a player year in year out we are linked with, Arda Turan? The player is not a regular for Barcelona, is believed to be a big Liverpool fan, is a creative player who can play in a number of positions.  Would be a good signing wouldn’t he?  Right Twitter world over to you 😉
