Champions League Liverpool News

Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Hoffenheim last night ensured the clubs return to the Champions League for the first time since Jürgen Klopp’s arrival in Merseyside.

Following their fourth place finish in the Premier League last season, a two-legged qualification round had to be played in order to obtain European football next season, which they passed without much difficulty. The Reds are England’s most successful club in Europe, winning the prestigious prize five times.

However, the excitement of Champions League football may not last long with the draw to decide the group stages taking place at 5.00pm today. Klopp’s side are in pot three which brings a chance of being drawn into a group of death, or even two.

Being drawn with Real Madrid, RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain is a possibility and would certainly make for interesting viewing. Liverpool have targetted Leipzig midfielder Naby Keïta throughout the summer transfer window, however, the German club have refused to sell.

A clash against Real Madrid would be Klopp’s hardest test given Zinedine Zidane’s side are favourites for the prize after winning it in the previous two seasons. However, Liverpool are renowned for their performances against the biggest sides and it’s unlikely many teams would be keen on a trip to Anfield.

However, it doesn’t end there. Being drawn with Barcelona, Juventus and Feyenoord is also a possibility and following the Spanish’s sides pursuit of Philippe Coutinho this summer, it will be interesting to see which side the Brazilian plays for.

With Juventus, Massimiliano Allegri will be determined to put aside his previous final defeats and finally win the trophy with the Bianconeri. It’s unlikely either group will be drawn, but it goes to show how tough Liverpool’s competition in the Champions League could be and perhaps a reason why Jürgen Klopp needs to strengthen his squad as soon as possible.
