Jürgen Klopp has come to the rescue of under fire new signing, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who experienced heavy backlash and ridicule for his performance against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

Chamberlain, who made the switch to Merseyside after 6 years in North London with Arsenal, made his full debut for his new club on Tuesday night but had a night to forget. Clumsy touches, uncertain dribbles and a missed chance depicted that this wasn’t the dream start he would’ve expected. However, Klopp has defended his summer addition, insisting he had a ‘calf problem’.

“Ox had a few really, really good situations and a few unlucky situations. I thought he did really well in the moments when you could see he was trying to adapt to the style of play,” the Germain said.

“He had a little problem with the calf, not an injury but a little problem. We all need to get used to this and manage it a little better. It was his first game from the start but I can imagine.”

The midfielder, who arrived at Anfield on Deadline Day, has been taunted by much of social media after Arsenal’s unbeaten form since selling the Englishman, whereas Liverpool are yet to win a game since Chamberlain switched shades of red. Klopp believes he has no doubts about the impact the 24-year-old can have.

“He didn’t play the best game of his life so people probably ask: ‘What’s the impact he can have?’ But I’m not in doubt about this.”
