Former England international Paul Ince has stated that James Milner is more important to Liverpool than Philippe Coutinho. Speaking on ITV4’s pre-match coverage of Liverpool’s Audi Cup final against Atlético Madrid, Ex-Liverpool player Paul Ince claimed that James Milner was Liverpool’s most important player.

Ince said the England international’s importance to Liverpool’s ambitions should not be underestimated by the fans.

Liverpool were beaten 5-4 on penalties by Atlético Madrid in the Audi Cup final following a 1-1 draw in Munich. Keidi Bare gave Atlético the lead on 34 minutes with a rebounded header before Roberto Firmino equalised from the spot after Gabi fouled Divock Origi in the box.

Atlético scored all five of their penalties in the shoot-out, but Jordan Henderson was the unlucky man for Liverpool, seeing his spot kick saved by Miguel Angel Moya’s feet.

Ince, who played for Liverpool from 1997-1999 talked up the many talents of the England midfielder and claimed that Milner was of more importance to Jürgen Klopp than Philippe Coutinho, who scored 14 goals last season to secure Champions League qualification.

Even though most Liverpool fans would argue that Philippe Coutinho is the talisman of Jürgen Klopp’s side, Ince stated that James Milner is the Reds best player. The former Blackpool manager praised Milner’s versatility and the fact that Klopp can use him in a variety of roles to make the team more fluid.

“Forget Coutinho, James Milner is Liverpool’s best player,” said Ince.

“He can play in every position.”

Liverpool end their pre-season against Athletic Bilbao in Dublin on Saturday, before their first Premier League game at Watford on August 12th.
