Liverpool News

With the Spanish transfer window slamming shut last night, that all but confirmed the news that Philippe Coutinho would be remaining a Liverpool player (for the next five months at least). Since Paris Saint Germain triggered the release clause of Neymar to make the Brazilian the world’s most expensive player, the Spanish club have been pursuing the signature of his fellow compatriot and Ousmane Dembélé.

Whilst they succeeded in signing the Frenchman from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, the Catalans were unable to budge the Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group, from their ‘not for sale’ stance. This resulted in an ugly state of affairs as Coutinho handed in a formal transfer request and avoided training and playing because of a “back” injury; something Reds fans thought someone of the 25-year-old’s class would never stoop to.

Throughout the saga, Liverpool remained firm on their position and they’ve got their way as Coutinho won’t be moving to Spain like many thought. With the World Cup on the horizon next summer and Brazilian coach, Tite, saying that no-one is guaranteed a starting spot, it is likely that Coutinho will have to put his sorrow behind him and get on with helping Liverpool mount a serious title challenge.

And that could start as early as next Saturday in what is one of the Anfield club’s biggest games of the season, as they travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City. It is likely that face-to-face talks between Jürgen Klopp and Coutinho will be held when the former Inter Milan player returns to Merseyside next week.

The German coach will then assess his star man’s fitness and frame of mind at the clubs training ground, Melwood, before making a decision. However, after smashing Arsenal 4-0, Coutinho is unlikely to be immediately reintegrated into the starting eleven.

Instead of lining up alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, the former Dortmund coach will be hoping that the silky Brazilian can return to the fold and lead a star-studded attack alongside the likes of Roberto Firmino, Sadie Mané and summer signing Mohamed Salah.
