Liverpool should look to bring Philippe Coutinho back to the club this summer if his services become available, according to Jamie Carragher.

Coutinho, who has struggled in Spain since forcing a move to Barcelona in 2018, is reportedly set to leave after just one season with Atlético Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann set to arrive at Camp Nou this summer.

Whilst Coutinho struggles in La Liga, Liverpool have recorded their highest ever amount of points in a Premier League campaign, with 97, whilst also reaching the Champions League final for the second year running, where they will face Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham.

With the Brazilian set to be offered to club’s this summer, Carragher believes Reds should welcome back Coutinho and if a deal is possible, Jürgen Klopp’s side should pursue it, telling the Liverpool Echo: “I wouldn’t say I would be actively going to get him, but if there was a possibility of bringing Coutinho back for decent money, and Barcelona wanted to cut their losses a little bit because it hasn’t worked out, then I’d do that.”

“Would he be welcomed back? I’m not sure. But he should be. I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t be. I know he got a little bit of stick when he came back [with Barcelona in the Champions League because he wanted to move,” the former central defender added.

“But Xabi Alonso wanted to move to Real Madrid, Luis Suárez wanted to move to Barcelona, and we still loved them when they went. Sometimes we pick and choose who we love when they leave.”

“Nobody forced any player to go to Real Madrid or Barcelona, Javier Mascherano is another one. Suárez only got stick when he came back because of his antics in the first game. If he hadn’t done that then he’d be adored when he came back. What’s the difference between him and Coutinho?” Carragher finished with.

According to ESPN, Coutinho could be available for £90m this summer as the Catalan look set to cut their losses and bring Griezmann in to replace the midfielder.

Any transfer activity at Anfield will likely begin following the Champions League final on 1st June in Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. A win for Klopp would see him earn his first major honour since replacing Brendan Rodgers in 2015.
