Clube Desportivo das Aves took three points of Boavista in their effort to beat the drop in the Primeira Liga. However, VAR stole the spotlight.

Paulo Machado scored from the penalty spot eight minutes into the first half to give Aves the lead. The hosts doubled their lead just before half-time after Alexandre Guedes scored from Amilton’s cross.

Vitor Gomes then scored a tap-in from a near post flick-on to seal the win for the hosts. The away side called for the goal to be ruled out for offside but the referee let it stand. After various complaints, the referee consulted Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to examine the decision.

Then the most bizarre thing happened; during the video replay, a giant Boavista flag was blocking the camera’s line of sight. With the referee and his video assistants unable to review the decision, the goal stood. From viewing parts of the footage, the viewer can see that Vitor Gomes was actually offside.
