Riyad Mahrez has to be one of the standout players of this season scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists. His dazzling partnership with Jamie Vardy has fired Leicester City into title contention.

The Algerian arrived at Leicester City from Le Havre for two years ago but he has admitted that he was initially uncertain about the idea of a move to the King Power Stadium when he was first approached by the Foxes.

Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, the winger said: “I didn’t know Leicester. In France, we didn’t really [know them] because they were in the Championship. I thought they were a rugby club. I was like: ‘I don’t know…’ But then I came here to see the facilities and they were good. I do not regret signing for them, it’s the best club I’ve ever been at.”

Mahrez has been described as the “bargain of the century” after signing for Leicester City from the French Second Division for £400,000, which is perhaps only a small percentage of his current value. Leicester will have a tough job of keeping their skilful  winger at the King Power Stadium next season, with clubs from all around Europe keeping tabs on him.

Mahrez certainly believes Leicester can march on and be crowned champions come to the end of May. “This is Leicester’s best season ever and we just need to keep going,” Mahrez added. “We have the quality and we have the confidence, then when you start winning games you gain even more confidence. That’s how football goes.”

Leicester drew 2-2 with the Baggies on Tuesday night after late Craig Gardner’s free-kick rescued a point for his team. Despite dropping two points, the Foxes still lead Tottenham by three points as the title race really begins to heat up.
