Atlético Madrid boss Diego Simeone is eyeing Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy to replace Antoine Griezmann, according to The Mirror. Vardy, who will play at the World Cup next month, is said to have impressed the Argentine coach in the Champions League last season.

Simeone clinched another title with Atlético on Wednesday as a 3-0 win over Marseille saw the Spanish club lift the Europa League. The win was reportedly Griezmann’s last European game for Los Rojiblancos, with a move to Barcelona said to be on the cards.

If Griezmann’s departure does occur, Simeone is said to see Vardy as his ideal replacement for the Frenchman, with a front-two of Diego Costa and Vardy being a dreaded thought for many defenders.

Leicester are in talks with Vardy about a new two-year deal, with his wage set to increase significantly once more, but at 31, an offer from Atlético and the prospect of Champions League football could be a tempting proposition for Vardy after previously playing in the competition for the first time in 2016.

Vardy, a big game specialist, has scored 23 goals this season and has helped guide Leicester to a ninth-placed finish in the Premier League this season. A successful World Cup campaign for the former Fleetwood man could tempt Simeone to make a move, whilst Claude Puel will be hoping Vardy will still be at the club ahead of next season.
