Almost a year on after Marco Asensio was unveiled at the Santiago Bernabéu, the youngster has emerged as one of the biggest Spanish talents of his generation. Marco Asensio Willemsen was born in Mallorca in January 1996, his Dutch mother christened him Marco after the famous Netherlands and Milan player Marco van Basten. The youngster’s performances so early in his career have so far lived up to the Dutch legend’s name.

At the age of nine Asensio was spotted football agent Horacio Gaggioli, the man who was responsible for brokering Lionel Messi’s move to Barcelona during 2000-2001. Gaggioli left his home in Barcelona to watch Asensio play in Mallorca. He was very impressed.

I liked him a lot,” says Gaggioli, who is currently Asensio’s agent. “He was grandisimo, a great footballer. He was spectacular in every sense. He had things you could see would make him an important player, just like Messi.

Asensio rose through the ranks of Mallorca’s youth academy, graduating to the first team at only 17 years of age. This lead to him being coveted by various European clubs during the 2014-15 season. Barca approached the youngster, they bid €2.5 million for him but Mallorca insisted on €4.5 million up front. “Barca said, ‘No, we’re not able.’ They lost the opportunity,” said Gaggioli. “When they changed their mind after three months, it was too late.” Real Madrid had stepped into the breach.”

According to MarcaAsensio said during a Real Madrid TV documentary that tennis star Rafa Nadal, an avid Real Madrid fan and a Mallorca native, called Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, and urged him to sign the youngster. Perez then reportedly sent a private plane to pick up Asensio and his father in Mallorca, bring them to Madrid and give them a tour of the Bernabeu and the club’s training facilities. The rest, we can say, is history.

Last season was a breakout year for Asensio; he made 39 appearances across all competitions, scored 10 goals and made 4 assists. Each and every one of those goals can be found in the video below:
