Diego Costa was left in tears in the away dressing room at the Camp Nou after his red card against Barcelona on Saturday night, according to reports in Spain.

The Spaniard received his marching orders after repeatedly shouting ‘I sh*t on your wh*re mother’ in the face of referee Gil Manzano.

The clash was a crucial one for Atlético if they had any hopes of winning La Liga but Costa’s 28th-minute red card didn’t help their cause and after a long wait, Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi found a way past the defiant Jan Oblak in the 85th and 86th minute, extending Barcelona’s lead at the top to eleven points.

Costa attempted to confront the referee once more shortly after he began his journey to the tunnel, but Spain companion Gerard Piqué stepped in and, according to AS, told the striker: “Stop talking now! What do you want, a four-match ban?”

Los Rojiblancos boss Diego Simeone has revealed Costa has insisted he didn’t say the explicit phrase included in the referee’s report, whilst also calling out the Barça players for also insulting officials but escaping punishment.

“We have had many red cards, so we must be doing something wrong,” Simeone was quoted by the Mirror.

“I asked the referee at half-time and he told me Costa had said something wrong, but Costa assures me he did not.”

“Other players have said things and not been sent off. This does not excuse what Costa has done. If the referee feels there has been an insult, the dismissal makes sense. But the treatment is not the same for everyone.”
