In a shocking turn of events over the past 48 hours, FC Barcelona are willing to pay the £72million release clause of Real Madrid star Marco Asensio, according to Spanish outlet Dario Gol. The Spanish club recouped around £200 million from the sale of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain and are looking to replace the Brazilian before the start of the season.

Barcelona have been thwarted in their attempt to sign Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho with the Reds unwilling to let him go. The club had a £90 million bid rejected by Liverpool on Wednesday.

With Borussia Dortmund demanding over a £100 million for winger Ousmane Dembele, Barcelona seem to be frustrated and could turn their attentions elsewhere.

Earlier today, Spanish outlet Diario Gol claimed that the 21-year-old is now wanted by Barcelona as Neymar’s replacement. It is reported that Ernesto Valverde’s side are willing to trigger his £72m release clause in order to prize the 21-year-old away from the Bernabeu.

Asensio is one of Real Madrid’s brightest talents for the future but, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Isco ahead of him in the pecking order, his chances of making Zinedine Zidane’s starting line-up appear slim. Barcelona feel he is attainable because they can offer him regular game time over their La Liga rivals.

It was rumoured that Zidane was willing to offload Welsh forward Gareth Bale to accommodate Asensio in the coming season. The midfielder was linked with a move to  Manchester United in April but Asensio outlined his desire to remain at Real.

“In the end, I do not think about other teams or if I could play in other teams, I always think about Madrid,” Asensio said. I found it difficult at first, but you have to work in the training sessions and be prepared to take advantage of the opportunity when it comes. I already said that I wanted to stay and that I was going to fight for minutes.”

Diario Gol also add that Barcelona are also keen on Isco – whose Real contract expires next year. Earlier this week, reports claimed that Real Madrid offered Isco a contract extension but so far nothing has been confirmed yet.
