Former England international and Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has donated £500,000 worth of toys to the “Cash For Kids” charity on behalf of himself and his Italian restaurant.

Ferdinand, now 38, has said that he “can’t bear” seeing a child go without presents at Christmas.

The former defender who now works at BT Sport said: ‘As a father myself I couldn’t see children going without opening a present this Christmas Day – the work that Cash For Kids at Key 103 (a Manchester radio station) do is truly amazing.

“I’m glad that my restaurant Rosso and I can be involved in this and certainly help put a smile on locals kids’ faces this Christmas Day.’

The donation was made at some point last week and a huge pile of gifts (as can be seen below) arrived at the charity’s distribution centre where they will be sent around Manchester to children living in poverty.

This is not the only thing that Rio has done for the city, donating 11,500 sleeping bags to the city’s homeless population.

The host of the Key 103 breakfast show, Mike Toolan, called Rio live on air after he announced the donation.

After Rio revealed the extent of the donation Toolan was clearly shocked, exclaiming: ‘Half a million pounds? Rio I love you! Rio you’ve always done loads of good stuff for the city, you have changed so many lives in Manchester.’

The Cash For Kids Mission Christmas campaign aims to provide help and gifts for disadvantaged children all over the country, whether that is because of poverty, neglect or abuse.
