England have fallen down FIFA’s official world rankings despite topping their World Cup qualifying group and drawing against both Germany and Brazil in recent friendlies, dropping three places to 15th in the table.

Despite a disastrous campaign that saw the Azzurri failing to reach the finals for the first time since 1958, Italy have moved up a place in 14th, a position Italian people or newspapers won’t agree with, given their 0-0 draw with Sweden, which destroyed their chances of qualifying for Russia, was labelled ‘The Apocolypse’.

Italy aside, failure to qualify has yielded a drop in the rankings. Wales drop five places to 19th, Northern Ireland drop one to 23rd and the Republic of Ireland are level with Scotland on points and so both sides share 32nd place with Iran.

Unsurprisingly, world champions Germany retain top spot, with Brazil and Portugal completing the top three. Argentina being named fourth was very much down to Lionel Messi, who bagged a hat-trick against Ecuador on the night his nation needed a win to qualify. Much like Argentina, Poland have their star-man to thank for their place in the top ten, Robert Lewandowksi.
