Forestieri: Scout Report

Featured Transfer Rumours

Fernando Forestieri, 26, is currently playing for Sheffield Wednesday and was playing a pivotal part in a Sheffield Wednesday team that was looking to get promotion back into the Premier League. Unfortunately, Hull City beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 to bounce straight back up in the Premier League after a one-season absence.

Forestieri grew up in Argentina, but has Italian parents, which is why he decided to play for the Italy national team. Forestieri started his career at Genoa and then being sent out on loan to Siena and Vicenza. Forestieri never quite settled but was signed for 1.5 million euros by Udinese. As he was not good enough to start, Forestieri had the all too familiar feeling of being loaned out to several different clubs, including Málaga, Empoli, Bari and lastly Watford.

Following the takeover of the Pozzo family, Watford were flooded with young prospects from mainly Udinese and Granada, as all clubs are owned by the same chairman. This allowed Watford to have several players, including Forestieri. Forestieri, or ‘Fessi’ as he was called by the Watford faithful, was an instant hit with the Watford fans playing 32 games scoring 8 goals. Forestieri was a fans favourite, it was no surprise really; he showcased some brilliant skills and had a real passion for the club. He earned himself a five and a half year contract with the Hornets in January and was the first player to sign permanently from Udinese to Watford under the Pozzo family.

In total, Forestieri played 66 games scoring 17 times before being sold to Sheffield Wednesday following Watford’s promotion to the Premier League. This came as a shock to Watford fans who, as a majority, feel disappointed he was sold. Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand, are laughing they bought Forestieri for three million. Forestieri has been truly magnificent for the Owls, scoring 15 goals from 34 games. He has created a great relationship with striker Gary Hooper, but not a great relationship with referees…

Forestieri has picked up a reputation for diving, which is a reputation he does deserve. It is his only weakness in his game, a big weakness too. Hull midfielder Robert Snodgrass warned Forestieri about diving in the playoff final saying, “When Wednesday played us here I would have sent him off earlier, I think he dived about four times in the first half. I thought Forestieri was terrible for the game. It’s a contact sport but you don’t want somebody cheating. It’s cheating the referee. The referee has a hard enough job as it is.” Forestieri has been sent off twice for diving this season, he also got Bakary Sako sent off last season against Wolves when he just started to roll on the floor after all but no contact

I think that Forestieri will want Premier League football after not being given a chance at Watford and losing a playoff final, the club he may go to is Swansea. He has been linked with the Welsh club and having seeing Forestieri for three years, I think this would be the best team for him to go too.

Forestieri works incredibly hard, is a great passer of the ball and loves to showboat. All of these attributes is what the Swansea fans love to see. Swansea have a number of wingers, Routledge, Barrow, Dyer, Gorre, and Montero. Swansea do need a striker, however. Gomis looks like he is on his way out, could Forestieri be the man to take his place? I would say so.

Sheffield Wednesday will be looking to bounce back after a crushing loss at Wembley, so getting Forestieri off of Sheffield Wednesday’s hands will be tough, especially considering that the chairman is willing to invest a lot of money to get into the sacred Premier League…
