Paul Merson has claimed Theo Walcott was greedy to move to Everton from Arsenal after reported interest from Southampton and Bournemouth for the 28-year-old.

Walcott, who spent 12 years at the Gunners, made the move to Goodison Park after a lack of opportunities at Arsenal this season and with a World Cup coming this year, a quick-fire start under Sam Allardyce would aid his chances of flying to Russia.

“I don’t get it from Walcott’s (perspective)”, Merson wrote in his Daily Star column. “Where does he fit in that team? They’ve just been trashed by Tottenham and their manager says they need to be “more boring.”

“That doesn’t exactly fill you with excitement if you’re a forward going there, does it? You just know Sam Allardyce is going to go more defensive now – and that means less chances for Walcott.”

“If he wants to go to the World Cup he needs to score goals every week. But how many goals are Everton going to score going “more boring” than they were against Spurs?”

“He’s earned enough money. Now he’s moving all the way up to Liverpool. Why? Where are Everton going to come? Southampton and even Bournemouth both play more expansive football than Everton. Sometimes you can take a pay cut to play where you’re happy.”
