Chelsea News Transfer Rumours

According to reports, Chelsea have agreed a deal with AS Roma for the services of defender Antonio Rüdiger. The 24-year-old is expected to fly to London next week to complete a medical ahead of his move to Stamford Bridge.

Rüdiger joined Roma from Stuttgart on a permanent deal last year after impressing during a season-long loan at the Italian club. Initially, Roma rejected a bid of €35m but are now said to have accepted Chelsea’s second offer after the London club included add-ons into the deal.

The German will arrive at Stamford Bridge for £24m, which could rise to £33.4m after add-ons further into his Chelsea career. The Berlin-born man can play as a central defender, but also at right-back and is said to be comfortable in a back-three. He is currently in Russia for the Confederations Cup, where he will face Chile in the final tomorrow.

Chelsea were linked with Kostas Manolas and Virgil van Dijk in recent weeks, but it seems the signing of Rüdiger was more of a priority for Antonio Conte, who threatened to leave the club due to a lack of control. However, with Gary Cahill ageing, John Terry coming to the end of his contract and Nathan Aké joining Bournemouth, it’s likely Chelsea will look for another defender with the incoming funds.
