Arsenal vs Barcelona – Match Ratings

The European champions came out on top. Beating a resilient Arsenal side 2-0. Arsenal played well but just couldn’t take their chances in the final third. These are my match ratings for Arsenal.

Petr Cech – Cech played well and wasn’t responsible for conceding either goal. He kept out early efforts and put off Luis Suarez when he made himself big in the Gunners’ goal. He will feel let down by Flamini for the second goal and tried his best for the first.  Match Rating – 7/10

Hector Bellerin – Bellerin wasn’t his usual spirited self. He was quiet all game going forward and misplaced passes on several occasions. He kept Neymar as quiet as he could but left gaps in behind for the first goal. Match Rating – 6/10

Per Mertesacker – Many expected the German international to be exposed by the pace of “MSN.” However, he played quite well for most of the game. He will be disappointed by both goals as he played a large part in both. For the first the first goal he was too high up the pitch and for the second his poor touch led to the penalty. Overall the Gunners’ faithful will be pleased with the big German’s performance. Match Rating – 6/10

Laurent Koscielny – Koscielny was, as always, one of Arsenal’s best players. Shutting down many attacks and intercepting many through balls. He kept Suarez at bay and will be pleased with his performance. Match Rating 8/10

Koscielny was easily Arsenal’s best player

Nacho Monreal – Monreal is usually a 7 or 8 out of ten every week but he had a poor game in all honestly. All of his attacks were nullified and he left Messi in acres of space on multiple occasions. He will hope to get back to his regular self. Match Rating – 6/10

Francis Coquelin – Coquelin had a decent performance. Shutting down many of Iniesta and Rakitic’s attacks, as well as starting some of Arsenal’s. Coquelin has shown that he can mix it with the big boys and the way he played will be pleasing for Arsene Wenger. Match Rating – 7/10

Coquelin was impressive tonight

Aaron Ramsey – While he worked hard and ran box to box, Ramsey was one of Arsenal’s worst players. He gave the ball away countless times and played far too far forward. In the second half, he was bamboozled by Messi many times. He needs to step up and perform more consistently if he wants to hold down a midfield role.  Match Rating – 4/10

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – Chamberlain had Arsenals’ best chance of the net but was unlucky not to convert past Ter Stegen. His runs were good and he countered well, however, he lacked decisiveness in the final third. Match Rating – 6/10

Chamberlain will be disappointed he couldn’t finish his guilt-edge opportunity

Mesut Ozil – Arsenal only had 30% possession  so Ozil found it difficult to get a hold off the game. He wasn’t really involved and couldn’t create any proper chances. Match Rating – 5/10

Alexis Sanchez – Sometimes it seems that Sanchez tries too hard. He made poor decisions in the Barcelona half and misplaced seemingly easy passes. On the other hand, he won the ball back and kickstarted many of Arsenal’s counter-attacks. Match Rating – 6/10

Sanchez will hope to re-establish his form from last season

Olivier Giroud – I think this was the wrong decision to start Giroud. He lacked the pace in behind the vulnerable Barcelona defence and Arsenal failed to play to his strengths.  His hold up play wasn’t at it’s best and I can see Welbeck playing up front at the Camp Nou. Match Rating – 6/10
