Argentina legend Diego Maradona believes Lionel Messi has nothing to prove in Russia this summer and believes his country are not one of the favourites to win the World Cup.

Messi, who will look to match Maradona’s achievement of winning football’s greatest prize, has never won an international honour with Argentina, something many use against him in the debate for the world’s greatest.

Despite the pressure building on the Barcelona man’s shoulders, Maradona has insisted Messi has ‘nothing to prove’ in Russia and must ‘forget his critics’ if he is to succeed in what could be his last World Cup at the very top, though it’s still unclear if the 30-year-old’s brilliance will ever fade.

Maradona told Omnisport, via beIN Sports“I would advise Messi to keep playing, to enjoy the game. He has to forget about the critics if he can win the World Cup or not.”

“He doesn’t have to demonstrate anything. He has to enjoy the game on the field. I don’t know [Jorge] Sampaoli, I don’t know how he plays. But, I know a lot of the players and I know they will give everything.”

“And I think they have a good opportunity to win. But I don’t choose [Argentina] as a favourite because the favourite one never wins.”
