Ajax CEO and former Manchester United shot-stopper Edwin Van der Sar says 19-year-old defender Matthijs de Ligt is likely to leave the club this summer and a move to La Liga or the Premier League is on the cards.

de Ligt scored the opening goal in Wednesday night’s thrilling Champions League encounter between the Dutch side and Tottenham, though it was Mauricio Pochettino’s side who progress to the final after Lucas Moura’s stunning hat-trick.

And now, with the season drawing to a close and the beginning of the summer transfer window approaching, de Ligt looks set to join Frenkie de Jong in departing Ajax, and clubs such as Manchester United, Juventus, Barcelona and Liverpool have all been heavily linked to the centre-back’s services.

“I think these will be de Ligt’s final games with Ajax, but I hope he goes out on a high,” Van der Sar said speaking to Sky Sport Italia. “He’s been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club. I think he’ll go to England or Spain.”

The Dutchman also hinted that other departures could occur in the playing squad and for this reason, de Godenzonen wish to keep hold of head coach Erik ten Hag and his staff, saying: “We intend to keep hold of Ten Hag. That is our intention.”

“We know there will be a lot of changes within the squad, but we’d at least like to confirm the coaching staff.”
