Matthijs de Ligt has hinted at a possible move to Liverpool this summer which would see him play alongside his Dutch companion Virgil van Dijk.

The 19-year-old became the youngest player ever (17) to feature in a European final after Ajax’s Europa League final loss to José Mourinho’s Manchester United.

de Ligt also helped Ajax in their triumph at the Santiago Bernabéu as they eased past Real Madrid, running away 4-1 winners in the Champions League. Though the Dutchman has been linked to Bayern Munich and Barcelona in recent weeks, his latest comments will create speculation over a possible switch to the Premier League with Liverpool, revealing a move ‘could happen’.

Speaking to Omnisport, the central-defender said: “Virgil is a player who has experience in the top leagues. Of course, you want to learn from him. It’s very useful to play next to him in the Dutch team.”

“It could happen [Liverpool move]. He plays for Liverpool, a nice club. But I’m not focused on this, I’m focused on Ajax and then I will see where I will end up.”

The Leiderdrop-born youngster had also hinted at a possible move to Spain with Barcelona, following team-mate Frenkie De Jong who will join the La Liga giants on 1 July 2019 after agreeing a future transfer for €75m. The Ajax captain said in January: “I think anyone would like to play for Barcelona at some point in their career.”
