Following the disappointing 2016/17 season, West Ham will be hoping to strengthen their squad enough to become a team that is in contention for European football. The Hammers have already secured Pablo Zabaleta from Manchester City who will be an answer to all of their problems at right-back, but that still isn’t enough for them to become a top quality premier league side.

Their main target for the transfer window is Olivier Giroud, who would be a fantastic improvement to West Ham’s team. The Frenchman would suit West Ham’s style of play, and provide an aerial threat alongside Michail Antonio. The 30-year-old bagged 98 goals and 41 assists in 227 games for Arsenal since joining the club for £12m back in 2012, with a large number of those games coming off the bench.

The Hammers are also interested in Giroud’s teammate, Theo Walcott, who has scored 19 goals and recorded 2 assists in just 29 games this season. There are rumours floating about that West Ham are interested in signing the pair from Arsenal for a fee of around £50m and though it is only a rumour, it is very exciting for West Ham fans.

Adama Traoré is another option that West Ham have shown interest in. Like Michail Antonio, Traoré’s game largely revolves around his high levels of pace to beat defenders, however, he isn’t the best when it comes to the final ball. The 21-year-old is a product of the famous La Masia, so he clearly has some intelligence in his game. However, spells at Aston Villa and Middlesbrough both resulted in relegation for the Spaniard.

West Ham are also interested in Belgian’s Thorgan Hazard, brother to Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard. French media outlet, Foot Mercato, say the Hammers are enquiring about the 24-year-old’s signature. Hazard scored 6 goals and got 4 assists in just 23 games in a successful campaign in the Bundesliga last season. However, the Hammers will need to fend off Leicester City to sign the 24-year-old, which could increase his price.

All of these options are known as attacking players, but that isn’t the only place where West Ham’s problems lie, their defence last season was a shambles at times and they should look at solidifying that. According to HITC, Nathan Aké is on Slaven Bilić’s radar. If the Hammers do wish to sign him, they’ll have to get it done fast however due to interest from Bournemouth, who are willing to pay £20m for his services.

The goalkeeper position became a concern for West Ham at times last season with both Darren Randolph and Adrián going on terrible runs of form. It is also known West Ham are interested in signing the Euro 2016 winning Sporting Lisbon goalkeeper: Rui Patrício. He is an extremely consistent goalkeeper and has been a regular for Portugal since he was in the U16’s team, with an expertise of commanding his box.

If West Ham reverted to a three or five at the back, including Reid, Ogbonna and Portuguese teammate José Fonte, the Irons would concede a reduced number of goals and in turn, finishing higher in the table, which is what everyone wishes to achieve at the London Stadium.
