Watford Should Take A Punt On Walsall Wonderkid Rico Henry

With Nathan Ake going back to Chelsea after his loan and the future of Jose Holebas still hanging in the balance, It’s a certainty that Watford will be in the hunt for a new left-back or even two new left-backs in the summer. These days that position is hard to find in the transfer market for a reasonable fee and Watford will do well to find one who’s good enough and not at a stupid price tag. Which is why I’ve highlighted Walsall whizkid, Rico Henry as one of the two left-backs Watford should target. Reason being is that he’ll be at a reasonable price, around £3/4M and has a very bright future. The young defender who burst onto the scene last season but didn’t become a regular until this season won player of the month in September 2015 following some fine performances in the league and notably scoring in the 2-1 victory over Brighton in the cup. The 18-year-old got his first call up to the England under 19’s team in November for his displays for Walsall, so he is held in high regard when it comes to his future. It was reported that Watford, along with a few other Premier League clubs was interested in Henry in the January transfer window but evidently nobody made a move. Henry’s style of play has been likened to a young Ashley Cole, not a bad comparison eh? his raw pace bombing up and down that left flank and also his intelligence to read the game at such a young age is a great trait to have. With Watford lacking top English talent and The Pozzo family who pride themselves on finding young players and developing them into world beaters, Walsall’s young star is a good place to start. I’m not saying this is going to 100% happen but the last time we signed a certain someone from Walsall and who’s also from Birmingham, turned out to be our club captain, Troy Deeney and IF we hold any interest in Rico Henry, I’d snap their hands off for him.
