Player Profile: Heurelho Gomes

Heurelho Gomes is Watford’s first choice goalkeeper and deservedly so. Gomes was signed from Spurs following his release from the club in 2015. Gomes was very unreliable and inconsistent at Tottenham and had gained a terrible reputation for making mistakes.
His release meant that Watford were able to sign the experienced goalkeeper on a free transfer. Watford are no strangers to unreliable goalkeepers with Scott Loach, Almunia and Johnathan Bond to name a few. So the last thing Watford fans wanted was another similar goalkeeper. It did not get off to a good start either and Watford fans were concerned it was going to be another disappointing year for the Hornets, however that was not the case.
Gomes got off to a poor start to his career with Watford. He did not impress and his kicking was very poor. Even worse than it is now! It must have only been nerves however, as he really started to show what he could do. He helped Watford gain a lot of points and the signing was a great deal looking back on it. He was a key player for Watford Earning promotion playing 44 games. Gomes signed a new three-year contract with the club on 20 May 2015 just after the season ended.
This year Gomes has only built on his positive start with Watford playing 28 games keeping 10 clean sheets. Watford fans saw his dark side however in his one game of madness against Leicester away. He fumbled a weak shot by Kante and then he stupidly fouled Vardy in the box. Gomes has been back to his best since then however and is a real fans favourite. Hs is also massively respected by the players with the captain Troy Deeney coming out to say, “He (Gomes) is a bit like a fine wine, he just gets better with age, we appreciate him.”
