Asking The Fans: Watford vs West Brom

In this article, I ask four Watford fans their thoughts on the game tonight. In the reverse fixture, West Brom won 3-1.

Firstly, I asked Jacob Culshaw. His twitter is @Culshaw17 where you can find his YouTube channel too.

If we fail to pick up any points today, are we back in the relegation battle?

“Personally, if it wasn’t for such a number of poor calibre teams below us then tonight would be a must win. Although we can’t be too relaxed, with us now having a seven point cushion from 18th place Hull and with a significantly better goal difference, I can’t see us going down. However, today is a must-not-lose game. We need to keep a comfortable gap between us and the relegation zone, because we have to remember we’ve got difficult games come the end of the season. So if we lose to a similar standard of opposition like West Bromwich Albion and start a bad run, we could be dragged back into it.”

I know us as Watford fans have been screaming for Success to start every game, but is today his day to start?

“Like other Watford fans, I am one who has been urging Mazzarri to start the Nigerian. However, for the style of team we are facing tonight and the way in which Tony Pulis sets up his side, I don’t think it would be right for his inclusion. We know West Brom will set up defensively, difficult to break down and of course be physical from the off. This game is set-up for Stefano Okaka to bully the centre-half’s, with his strength holding up the ball and aerial threat. Although I am an admirer of Success, I would prefer to see Okaka start upfront tonight.”

How do you think Watford will fair against a well organised West Brom team?

“Tonight’s result is all about how Mazzarri sets up his Watford team. If we play five at the back, with little going forward, it could be a dull evening at Vicarage Road. We all know how tough it is to break down a Tony Pulis side. To counteract their defensive prowess, Mazzarri needs to step out of his comfort zone and play four at the back. This allows players to take on the defenders, especially the centre-half’s who aren’t blessed with pace! If he does this it may be an interesting encounter.”

I am sure you are aware of the rumours linking Troy Deeney to west Brom for £20m. Bearing in mind his family have moved back up to Birmingham, are you worried at all?

“Yes I saw the rumours, but how reliable they are? We don’t know. Like you said, with Deeney being Birmingham-bred and with his family moving back up to Birmingham, it could hint at a possible exit in the summer. However, in my opinion, it would seem unlikely for our skipper to leave to a side not to dissimilar in footballing ability. Deeney’s not worth 20 million pounds, but what he gives on and off the pitch can’t be replaced. What he gives to his football club is priceless, so I would find it strange if he was to leave.”

Finally, what is the team you would like to see tonight?

“Gomes; Janmaat, Prodl, Britos, Holebas; Cleverley, Doucoure, Amrabat, Niang; Okaka, Deeney

I dropped Capoue just because Doucore played really well at the weekend. Also, I prefer it when we play four at the back!”

Next, I asked Henry. His twitter account is @Htam96.

If we fail to pick up any points today, are we back in the relegation battle?

“Tonight’s game is one of those that can either make people dream, or make them fear, come 10pm. Winning would put us 7 points off West Brom, losing could put us down to 16th, 3 or 4 points above the drop. I get the feeling that the Sunderland game could have been one of those season-defining games that gives everyone the confidence to keep on going – that was the big one. West Brom do play some good football for a team with Hal Robson-Kanu and Allan Nyom, but they’ll be looking at the Europa League places, and I do think they’ll win tonight. Looking at the teams towards the bottom some of them have a very tough run in, especially Palace. It is going to be like last season, where we stay up due to the quality of the teams below us, says a lot about the league really.”

I know us as Watford fans have been screaming for Isaac Success to start every game, but is today his day to start?

“Success is one of those irritating little-talented players that we have been gifted during the Pozzo era who we use badly. For me, he’s an impact sub, he’s great to bring on and cause weary legs a problem. He did start against Boro away and caused havoc with Barragan, but he’s also very predictable to watch, and he tries to do too much. He’s like Forestieri or Fabbrini in the sense where he’s almost too good for himself. Would I start him? Why not, as a team we aren’t great up top so why not a 4-3-3 to try and get something out of today?”

How do you think Watford will fair against a well organised West Brom team?

“After beating Arsenal and drawing against United, giving Manchester United only 3 shots; West Brom are clear favourites for me. Recent losses against the in-form Palace and Everton show that they are susceptible to leaking goals on occasion, so for me Watford have to be bold and attack to get anything out of today. I’d take a draw right now due to injuries and being formless.”

I am sure you are aware of the rumours linking Troy Deeney to West Brom for £20m. Bearing in mind his family have moved back up to Birmingham, are you worried at all?

“I summarised this rumour in about 10 words the other day, completely forgotten how I worded it, so here’s a re hash. Troy supports Birmingham City, so why would he play for a city rival? He’s also our captain on a high wage, he wouldn’t be captain at West Brom and he knows that there are positive advancements being made at Vicarage road. It would be a sideways move. West Brom really aren’t much better than Watford, I’m not worried. Plus the “bid” is touted as £20m and I seem to recall rejecting £35m from the Champions of England with Champions League football. Next ‘story’ please.”

Finally, what is the team you would like to see tonight?

“Gomes; Janmaat, Proedl, Britos, Mason; Cleverly, Doucoure, Capoue; Niang, Deeney, Success.”

Thirdly, I asked Anthony. His twitter is @WatfordStatus.

If we fail to pick up any points today, are we back in the relegation battle?

“We still need a few more points. But teams are tightly packed that anyone of 9 teams still can drop. The same pressure on us is identical to those around us, we should be okay.”

We’ve been screaming for Isaac Success to start every game, but is today his day to start?

“He has been out for the majority of the season, like most our creative attackers. I think the manager is being overly cautious, however, we’d rather not aggravate a possible problem. Same applies to Deeney. No point playing if going to rule him out the season. We’re not stacked with clinical strikers.”

How do you think Watford will fair against a well organised West Brom team?

“West Brom have been the surprise package of the season. Nobody would’ve thought they’d be closer to Europe than the drop. An Organised team, bizarrely hard to beat with a supposed inform Nyom. Scary. I’ll be happy with a point.”

I am sure you are aware of the rumours linking Troy Deeney to west Brom for £20m. Bearing in mind his family have moved back up to Birmingham, are you worried at all?

“Not worried. I don’t see where the step up is in going to WBA should he want to move. We live in a money orientated world now, less loyalty by players, however, Troy won’t find a connection with their fans as he does here. Also, good luck bidding for Troy, if they were so tight bidding for Ighalo.  It Won’t happen.”

Finally, what is the team you would like to see tonight?

“Hopefully, something like this, dependent on injuries: Gomes; Cathcart, Prodl, Britos, Holebas; Cleverly, Capoue, Doucoure; Success, Deeney, Niang”

 Lastly, I asked @SimplyWatford.

If we fail to pick up any points today, are we back in the relegation battle?

“I personally think we’re safe, but only because there’s at least 3 teams below who are worse than us. I think Sunderland and Boro are down and then Hull and Swansea will battle out the last spot. Although we must see this game as one we can get points from to get closer to that 40 point mark.”

 Isaac Success; Should He Start?

“I think Success has to start today. Amrabat’s fitness has been called into question again after the game so Success has to be given his chance from the off. I’d love to see him and Niang out wide to run at Nyom and Dawson. That’s our best chance of getting a result tonight.”

How do you think Watford will fair against a well organised West Brom team?

“We could struggle tonight, West Brom will love to defend any long balls into Deeney so we will have to be less direct than we have been. They’ll let us have possession today and we don’t always look comfortable when we’re in control. With they’re strength in set pieces and our weaknesses in defending them I think that could prove to be the difference again. We have to be just as organised.”

 Troy Deeney to West Brom?

“I’m not worried about Troy leaving. I like that bigger teams are admiring our talisman again but his chance to leave has passed now and unless a top 4 team come chasing I don’t think we’ll see Deeney leave for a long time. He knows what he has at this club is rare to find and with more changes in the summer incoming we need Troy to keep our identity.”

Finally, what is the team you would like to see tonight?

“If I was Mazzarri I’d pick: Gomes; Janmaat, Cathcart, Britos, Holebas; Cleverly, Doucoure; Niang, Capoue Success; Deeney.

Much more balanced midfield which allows Capoue to get forward and support Troy.”
