Following Swansea’s final preseason match; a 1-0 win over Stade Rennais, manager Francesco Guidolin confirmed that the signing of highly-rated Spanish striker Borja Baston from Atletico Madrid. The 23-year old has had 5 separate loan spells and spent last season at SD Eibar; where he scored 18 goals in 36 league games. He has made a single league appearance for Atleti and has fallen behind Antoine Griezmann, Fernando Torres, Angel Correa and new signing Kevin Gameiro in the pecking order at the Madrid club.
Despite his inability to break into the Champions League finalists’ team, Baston is highly rated by the Spanish media and enjoyed a fine 15/16 campaign. It is believed that he would cost Swansea £15m which surpasses the current transfer record for the club: £12m for Wilfried Bony in 2013.
With Andre Ayew’s pending departure to West Ham, Swansea are in the market for new strikers and the signing World Cup winner Fernando Llorente from Sevilla was a signal of intent by the Welsh club and the Basque frontman is relishing the opportunity to play alongside Baston. He told the South Wales Evening Post; “[Baston] is a good player, he will be important for Swansea, I need help from all the players and I need competition.”
He would be Swansea’s 4th Spanish player for the upcoming season, joining Angel Rangel, Jordi Amat and the aforementioned Llorente. He would also be the latest in a long line of Spaniards at the club and the fans will hope he emulates the likes of Roberto Martinez and Michu in becoming an icon for the South Wales club.
