Free agent Victor Anichebe has joined David Moyes’ Sunderland on a one- year deal.
The Nigerian international was released at the end of last season by West Bromich Albion, the club of which he had played for 55 times, after moving from current Black Cats manager David Moyes’ Everton side.
Anichebe made 130 appearances for Everton, with Moyes bringing him up through the ranks as a youth player.
Speaking to the club, he said “I have a lot of good friends here and everyone knows I know the manager very well”.
He was also quoted saying “I had a few options in England and Europe but the manager was a huge pull for me. He knows me inside and out and I feel he can get the best out of me”.
It is expected that Anichebe will play a limited role for the Sunderland side, backing up Jermain Defoe, with competition from Duncan Watmore, Joel Asoro and Fabio Borini (when fit).
This may also rule out Sunderland making a move for Nickolas Bendtner, who was linked after playing for the club in a previous loan spell from Arsenal.
