Watford Vs Stoke City: Asking The Fans

Watford Vs Stoke City: Asking The Fans

Stoke Watford

I asked three Watford fans the same set of questions and this was their answers…

@HannahDavis333

1) Does the away 2-0 victory give Watford and psychological advantage do you think?

No, I do not think that the away leg will be on the players’ minds. Stoke have improved a lot since then, so although that was a great win for us. I think Quique Sanchez Flores and the players know it’s going to be harder this time around. If anything has given us a psychological advantage, it was the win on Sunday at The Emirates.

2) Do you believe that Ighalo has changed after how he performed against Arsenal?

I think that his performance at Arsenal has ended his goal drought. I don’t want to get too hopeful, but I think he will be on a massive confidence boost after that game, so I’m expecting more goals for him against Stoke.

I was also really pleased at how he attempted to pass to Deeney rather than being single minded during the Arsenal game, so it would be nice to see him continue this on against Stoke and maybe even give Deeney an assist!

Ighalo

3) Are Watford in a relegation battle?

No way. We are 12 points from the drop, and I can’t see both Norwich and Sunderland gaining 12 points in the remaining games. I think us fans would feel more comfortable hitting that 40 point mark, but even if we somehow manage to lose most of our remaining games, I am pretty sure we would still be safe from the drop.

4) Do you think the FA Cup is beneficial for the rest of the season or not?

Yes, I think it’s beneficial. Because we know that we are safe in the league, the FA Cup will give us another aim for the season. It will stop the team from sitting back for the rest of the season because we have met our initial goal of staying up.

Winning the FA Cup would also be beneficial for next season, because it will yet again be another confidence booster for the players of we win it. Winning the cup may also help attract some quality players during the summer transfer window.

5) Who is Stoke’s biggest threat?

I think Jack Butland is going to be causing Ighalo lots of problems. He is a top keeper who has just been named in the England squad for the Friendly against Germany, so he’ll be on a high after that. We know that Gomes has frustrated many teams we have played this season, so on Saturday we will see what it is like to have some great opportunities stopped by Butland.

6) As you probably heard, Deeney did not make the squad for the friendly against Germany. Was that the right call from Roy Hodgson?

I think Troy is a risk that Roy was not willing to take. Roy Hodgson was definitely put off by Deeney’s lack of goals, but he makes up for this by the hard work he does on the pitch, frustrating defenders and creating golden opportunities for others to score.

I think Roy Hodgson could have either really benefitted with a hard working player like Deeney, or Deeney could have been a bit of a flop.

7) What would you like the starting eleven to look like?

Gomes, Cathcart, Proedl, Nyom and Ake in defence. Cathcart and Nyom both had a great game on Sunday and deserve to start against Stoke. In midfield I’d like see Jurado, Capoue, Watson and Guedioura. I prefer Jurado more central, but as long as he’s on the pitch I’m happy, because I miss watching him play.

I think Guedioura needs to start, or at least play some of the game because of his outstanding performance against Arsenal. Deeney and Ighalo can also start as usual.

8) Score prediction?

I predict a 1-0 win with an Ighalo goal. I wouldn’t be surprised though if we ended 1-1 conceding a late goal.

@WatfordStatus

1) Does the away 2-0 victory give Watford and psychological advantage do you think?

Not sure it’ll have too much bearing on Saturday but it’ll remind Stoke that Watford are no pushovers. Not many teams travel to the Britannia Stadium with three points.

It will be interesting to see how Watford approach the game considering the potters have had many months to assess our game plan.

Troy Deeney2) Do you believe that Ighalo has changed after how he performed against Arsenal?

It was Ighalo’s first goal for around a month. The problem is he obviously knows fan criticism of not assisting others better placed. So now, he’s making the wrong calls, trying to assist when players aren’t available, when he should be getting a shot away he looks for team mate. It sounds fickle, however his footballing mind isn’t clear at the moment. He scored the poacher’s goal, a lovely roll of the defender to slot home, which has made his name in Hertfordshire.

He is trying to address the problem, so if fit this weekend, will be interesting to see if he tries to pick out team mates more.

3) Are Watford in a relegation battle?

Watford’s recent form in the league isn’t the best, however it only took a moment of magic for Leicester to lose 1-0, whilst Watford should’ve battered Man United, however Mata showed why he is world class & why you’ve simply got to take chances presented in Premier League. It is fine margins at present.

Relegation battle though? We’ve been stuck wanting 3 points for some time now, however those points required by those in bottom 3 is narrowing. It’s not assured yet, but think we’re fine.

4) Do you think the FA Cup is beneficial for the rest of the season or not?

If Watford could pick up those 3 points to reach the proclaimed ‘Safety Line’ the sooner the better, it’ll mean our sole focus could be aimed at the Cup.

I normally say competing in the cup hinders objectives hence trying to get promoted, but if we can just get those points as soon as possible then we can use those games around the FA Cup to experiment & give others chance to impress. If Watford were in Championship in top 6, I’d say league is priority, but if Watford can get 3 points at soonest chance, FA Cup will provide sole focus.

5) Stoke’s biggest threat?

I don’t follow anyone nor know those from Stoke personally. I would say their goalkeeper Butland is their best player. He’s been very good in recent years however I do remember our Hornets putting 6 past him in Zola’s first season for Birmingham.

Shaqiri I’d say is biggest threat but is out along with Shawcross. Bonus for the golden boys.

6) As you probably heard, Deeney did not make the squad for the friendly against Germany. Was that the right call from Roy Hodgson?

It’s hard to say my opinion without those thinking I’m biased. Troy I believe is deserving to be included in England squad. He was extremely unlucky to play one of his worst games when Roy took a trip to Vicarage Road to watch Deeney stuck in an unsuited role in the draw vs Bournemouth. Is there anyone that’s similar within the England setup like Troy? No.

There’s still more friendlies ahead of Paris Euros, so still may get call up, however his whole hearted approach play Is lacking in the England squad at present. He unsettles everybody he plays, so in my opinion, deserved a call up.

7) What would you like the starting eleven to look like?

The strongest possible team. We need those 3 points. Not desperately but to allow us to train all focus on the FA Cup.

I believe I heard hard nut Britos & Ighalo are injured so my ideal team would be:

Gomes

Paredes Proedl Cathcart Holebas

Capoue Suarez Guedioura

Jurado

Oulare Deeney

8) Score prediction?

Without Ighalo, the aforementioned team I believe would have right balance of attack and defense.

There is no harm in sticking in Oulare who is raw, fresh and immensely talented. Give him a go, the kid defiantly has something about him. Guedioura must keep his spot. He is one of the rare players who actually holds attacking intent & more importantly scores goals from midfield. No one else contributes from midfield in the scoring so he must keep his place. Suarez game by game improves whilst Holebas is extremely good, needs to start.

Match prediction, I’d be happy with a draw. Stoke are still a tricky prospect however we’ve done well recently without the results to back it up. Both sides missing key personnel so 1-1 sounds the result most likely in my head.

Not sure it’ll have too much bearing on Saturday but it’ll remind Stoke that Watford are no pushovers. Not many teams travel to the Britannia Stadium with three points.

@HTAM96

1) Does the away 2-0 victory give Watford and psychological advantage do you think?

I don’t think Watford have the mentally instilled I think that a result earlier in the season means anything regarding the fixture tomorrow. Both Watford and Stoke have improved immeasurably since September, however Watford have struggled in the league of late. But then again, since beating Arsenal in the cup I can imagine that Watford’s mind-set has changed. Long story short, I really don’t know and it could be quite an even game.

2) Do you believe that Ighalo has changed after how he performed against Arsenal?

I don’t think that I can answer this question until he scores again against Stoke. One goal means nothing if he doesn’t keep it up. Ask me again after the game and I might have an answer. His performance against Arsenal was massively improved.

3) Are Watford in a relegation battle?

For me Swansea and above are safe in the league. We just need to enjoy the ride and hope that we can win the cup.

4) Do you think the FA Cup is beneficial for the rest of the season or not?

The FA cup is massively beneficial for both fans and players in my opinion. For the fans it is a real signal of intent from the Pozzo family at the very least and for the players it is a reward for how well they have done. Winning the cup would be one of English football’s great stories considering how far we have come in 7 years.

5) Who is Stoke’s biggest threat?

Without a doubt Shaqiri is Stoke’s biggest threat as they cannot function offensively without him. So with him being injured, Watford will have an easier game. Bojan and Affelay are fantastic players, for me if Watford could properly deal with Bojan and Affelay then our game plan will be a lot easier.

Bojan

6) As you probably heard, Deeney did not make the squad for the friendly against Germany. Was that the right call from Roy Hodgson?

I’m a bit of a traditionalist really in terms of how I think England should play. Personally I think a big striker like Rooney should be partnered with a speedy skilful striker like Defoe. Rooney is out until just before the Euro’s so I think that the perfect replacement for Wayne is Troy. They both are similar players, leaders, come short and go long in attack and work with a partner. I can’t see how England are supposed to do well with all pace and no muscle upfront. I don’t think anyone knows how Sturridge or Walcott got into the team ahead of Troy.

7) What would you like the starting eleven to look like?

Gomes

Nyom, Proedl, Cathcart, Holebas;

Suarez, Behrami, Capoue;

Deeney, Jurado, Ighalo.

Presuming that all are fit. Watson could do with a sit down.

8) Score prediction?

2-1 To Watford.
