The Hidden Gem?

The 24-year-old Spanish defensive midfielder arrived at St Mary’s in the last transfer window for around £5 million pounds. And also as an unknown name to the Southampton fans who were still feeling the effects of the sale of Morgan Schneiderlin to Manchester United for £25 Million pounds, who was arguably the best Defensive Midfielder in the Premier League in his final season with Southampton. Is Oriol Romeu a hidden gem?
Although Oriol was bought more as a backup defensive midfielder, recently he has found himself as a very important player for the team. His run in the team started after Victor Wanyama’s 3rd red card of the season kept him sidelined for 5 games. And Oriol performed excellently in Wanyama’s absence.
Oriol has been very reliable so far in his short stay at Southampton and like Striker Shane Long and Academy Graduate Matt Targett he was given an opportunity to prove himself in the starting XI and he has taken it.
Oriol has won 39 tackles in all Premier league games he’s played while committing 22 fouls and receiving 7 yellow cards. One downside to his play is that sometimes he rushes in or mistimes a tackle on the opponent. But with time I believe that Oriol can iron out these errors. He has also completed 6 key passes although this doesn’t seem like a lot it’s very impressive for a DM that has only started a few games. This shows that Oriol also has an attacking side to his game. Frequently at matches, I will see him bombing forward and looking for a forward pass, which is always appreciated by the Southampton crowd. Following this up, Oriol has one of the best-attacking scores of any defensive midfielder in the league (source: Squawka) which shows his attacking qualities.
Overall I think Oriol was another fine catch from our famous ‘Black Box’ and also another one that slipped away from Chelsea.
