Southampton, Where will they finish?

This has been a very odd season so far. Many argue it could be the strangest season to date. Not only is Leicester the league leaders after 28 games but last season’s Champions Chelsea have had a troubled season. And up until Gus Hiddink’s arrival they were struggling down in 15th place.
Southampton have also had a very different season. The first half the season was a tough time for the Saints. After 19 games we were down in 12th place with 24 points and only 5 points off the relegation places. Whilst it was clear to any fan that Southampton wouldn’t go down it was very worrying to see us so low. These feelings also brought along if’s and buts about the players and our fantastic manager Ronald Koeman futures. Would they want to stay with us after such a poor/disappointing season? After all, it’s hard enough to keep our players when we’ve had an amazing season let alone a bad one.
However since then we have improved and have quite recently reached as high a 6th. This was down to our 6 match unbeaten run. A huge part of it was Fraser Forster’s return to action and also us changing formation to a 5-3-2/3-5-2. The formation helped us tighten up a leaky defence and also add attacking threats down the flanks. Matt Targett was brought in to play left wing back and has really shone in his spell with the team. And has contributed with 2 assists on top of some excellent performances.
At the moment Southampton are 9th in the league. This doesn’t sound great considering the form we have been in recently but from 4th position to 10th there is a 7 point gap. With 13 games left it is a race for Europe and maybe even higher. Southampton fans know we’re capable of getting Europa League qualification but it’s definitely going to be a tough battle this year.
I’ve seen a few fans saying they’re not bothered if we don’t achieve qualification for Europe and I can partly see where they’re coming from. Europe is a competition that at the moment we won’t win. On top of that some fans argue that it ruins the following season. However you can argue that it helps sign transfer targets as you have the lure of European football and also you can mention the good prize money your club will receive.
Southampton have a challenging run in playing teams like Leicester, Spurs, Manchester City, Stoke and Everton. One bonus to this is that some of the remaining games are against teams around us so we have chances to close gaps on teams/extend them.
So, where will Southampton finish? I firmly believe we can finish it strongly. My prediction is that Southampton will finish either 6th or 7th.
