Middlesbrough FC have confirmed the signing of United States international goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
Guzan has signed a two-year contract with the club and will enjoy another season in the Premier League, leaving the Midlands following Villa’s relegation to the Championship.
Guzan was at the heart of the Villa squad that got relegated last season after making 34 appearances for his former club.
The 31-year-old goalkeeper will bring bags of experience to the Riverside Stadium this summer, the new Boro man made 170 first-team appearances for Aston Villa in his eight year stay with the club since he moved to England from Mexican team Chivas in August 2008.
The United States international has also been capped 50 times and was Jurgen Klinsmann’s first-choice goalkeeper for the Copa America in June, which saw them reach the semi-final.
Boro have been one of the busiest clubs in England this summer as Guzan becomes Aitor Karanka’s ninth summer signing. They have already signed former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes who will certainly become their first-choice keeper and it is likely Guzan has been brought in to battle Tomas Meijas and Dimi Konstantopolous for the number 2 spot.
The newly promoted side has had an excellent summer thus far, signing experienced players along with very technical gifted players too, including the arrivals off Alvaro Negredo, Viktor Fischer, Marten de Roon and Antonio Barragan.
Aitor Karanka certainly means business going into the new season, the former Real Madrid assistant manager has remodelled his promoted side and with the squad they have put together they look well equipped for it, and could find themselves in the Barclays Premier League for years to come.
