Joey Barton has expressed his desire to return to football and not retire from the game as he begins his 18-month ban for breaching the Football Association’s betting rules.

The midfielder returned to the Clarets in the January transfer window and went on to feature on more than 10 occasions before receiving his ban last week. Barton admitted to placing over 1,200 bets across a 10-year period that clearly breached some of the regulations of the Football Association.

Despite the lengthy ban, Barton revealed that he intends to appeal against the severity of the ban, albeit the FA’s written report detailed the fact that they gave him the ‘shortest possible’ ban.

As it stands, Barton will be unable to play the sport professionally until the 26th October 2018, if he ever does make his return, he will be at 36 years of age.
