What do you do with a problem like Georginio Wijnaldum?

This is a player who was brought in to score and create for a Newcastle side who lack goals. If you look at the fact that Wijnaldum is Newcastle’s leading goalscorer, you would think he has done his job.

However, he has not scored since January 16th, when the Magpies defeated West Ham 2-1 at St. James’ Park on Jonjo Shelvey’s memorable debut.

Four of his nine goals came in one game, against Norwich. All nine have come at home, as well.

In the first half of the season, the Dutchman was anonymous away from home, but his excellent performances at St. James’ pretty much made up for it. In the second half of the season, his away form has stayed constant, but his home form has not been near the same level.

He’s now anonymous both at home and away from it, and has been ever since the turn of the year.

This is our record signing under Ashley. He looked to be a cracking signing early in the season, but you have to wonder if the £14 million shelled out on him has actually been money well spent.

He somehow has kept his place in the team – the main reason being Benitez, and McClaren before him, have not had many alternatives.

Benitez has shown he isn’t afraid of wielding the axe, though, when he dropped Shelvey against Swansea in favor of a more solid, compact central midfield. Wijnaldum was anonymous once again before being taken off in the 73rd minute.

Siem de Jong is the best option to replace him. I am a big fan of the Dutchman – an intelligent player who is never afraid to get on the ball and make something happen. Ayoze Perez could also make a return to the starting lineup. Rolando Aarons is an option, as well, and could inject some pace and width to the left side of midfield.

We know what Wijnaldum what is capable of. He showed how good he is in the first half of the season. Benitez kept faith in his teammate Moussa Sissoko, and his faith was rewarded on Saturday when the Frenchman, who was also made captain, scored his first of the season and put in an overall solid display.

Will he do the same with Wijnaldum? I guess we will have to wait and see.
