Newcastle’s next captain?

Newcastle

The captaincy at Newcastle United this season has been the duty of Fabriccio Coloccini. Coloccini has been the captain at Newcastle since 2011 and in this article we are going to look at whether he should retain the captains armband next season.

There has been a lot of discussion this season about whether or not Coloccini is fit to wear the captains armband again this season. With this speculation we look at who could be wearing the armband next season.

Daryl Janmaat has got to be in with a shout for the armband if it is up for grabs this summer. He has been a key player for Newcastle since 2014 when he arrived from Feyenoord. At 26 years of age he is arguably in his prime or close to it and has 4 years left on his contract. He has been a real stand-out player and it could be argued that he should get a chance to lead the magpies. Janmaat has been very consistent in my opinion and there are very few Newcastle players you can say that of!

Another player that has been touted for the Captaincy is Georginio Wijnaldum. He arrived in the summer for a fee of £14.5 million from PSV Eindhoven. He has scored 9 goals so far this season, 4 of which came against Norwich in the 6-2 thrashing at St James’ Park earlier this season. It is only his form away from home that has been a problem with his debut season. He is clearly a leader, and he is clearly very talented. It really hasn’t taken him long at all to adapt to the English game. He came with a huge reputation in Holland having won dutch player of the year last year. When we play well, he is key to everything that is good. In the middle of the park he can lead the team on the front foot and he has looked like he could be in with a shout at becoming captain next season should it be vacated by Coloccini.

Jonjo Shelvey and Tim Krul are the other two names that have been floated around in the speculation over the captains armband. Jonjo is clearly a leader. He speaks what he thinks and this resonates with the Geordie faithful. He can grab games by the scruff of the neck and get the job done even if it’s not pretty. He is a young, english talent and could have a very bright future in the famous black and white. Tim Krul is an obvious candidate for the role, he is a great goalkeeper whom, has unfortunately been injured pretty much all season. Yet, he is still in with a shot should the role become available.

So who should become captain next season? In my honest opinion. Any of the above. I do not think that Coloccini can retain the captaincy again, he has to vacate the role in my opinion. He has played the majority of games very well this season but I think that there has to be change for Newcastle to progress. Especially if Newcastle are to strengthen further in the summer they cannot carry on with Coloccini as captain. I think that Wijnaldum would be better suited to the role than the others however, the way in which he speaks about the club, it issues and going forward is incredible. He commands a real presence and you do get the feeling that the players really respect him. I think that this would probably be the best decision for the club but lets wait and see!
